Problem

Thousands of tree roots + underground utilities = high coordination risk

• Virtual models were created to coordinate the underground site utilities and advanced hydroponic systems, but the tress were only in 2D CADs and spreadsheets. This required a manual process of adding the 3D tree root assets to the model one at a time.
• On a project of this size, the landscaping designs changed pretty much daily, so trees would have to be updated constantly.

Solution

Custom Dynamo script to auto-generate 3D root ball models based on 2D data and specs. As soon as we received updated designs, the script would run again and the model updated automatically.

Result

Eliminated hundreds of manual modeling hours and mitigated future coordination issues by automatically modeling and updating over 9,000 “root balls” on the Apple Campus. The scripts I wrote were scalable and reused on other large site projects.
